Significant data and relevant information pertaining to the Pennsylvania Bureau of Correction from January 1, 1980, to June 30, 1981, are reported.
Abstract
The bureau operates 9 correctional institutions and 15 community centers. During the reporting period, the bureau implemented an annual health care survey, annual physical examination for inmates over the age of 40, the use of Medic-Alert bracelets in all facilities, and therapeutic diets as prescribed by physicians. In addition, training for emergency medical technicians is underway, along with dental lab improvements and the hiring of additional nurses to provide institutional health care around the clock. Improvements have also been made in food services. However, the State inmate population now exceeds capacity by more than 400 inmates and is continuing to increase at 12 percent annually. An urgent need exists for additional inmate housing. The report describes the bureau's various divisions, including community services; finance, planning, and research; prison industries; personnel management; special services; and staff development. The nine institutions are also described with attention to their accomplishments, operations, treatment, training, fiscal matters, inmate complaint system, and industries. Photographs, maps, graphs, and tables are included.
