To determine the impact of vocational or academic training on postrelease or parole success researchers reviewed the files of 238 ex-inmates of the Vienna Correctional Center (Illinois). They concluded that vocational training and education did improve postrelease success and ability to retain employment.
Abstract
In addition, they found that the need for inmate improvement extends beyond vocational skills to work attitudes. As the type of vocational certificate improved (more hours and a higher course level), and as the parolee grade-point average climbed, his length of employment on parole increased. There was little relationship between type of training and initial job placement, indicating the need for employment services to find a better match. Other implications are addressed. Ten references are provided.
