The report presents an overview of the nature and extent of crime in Montana during 1980 and includes a summary of Index crimes referenced by the reporting law enforcement agency.
Abstract
Crime against property accounted for 95.4 percent of all reported offenses, and crimes against persons accounted for 4.6 percent of all offenses. An Index crime occurs every 14 minutes and a property crime every 15 minutes. From 1970 through 1980, the number of crimes increased 83.5 percent, while the estimated population increased only 13.3 percent. Of the 36,791 major offenses known, only 21.7 percent were cleared. Crime projections and crimes by county are noted. The Montana Uniform Crime Reporting Program is described. Tabular and graphic data are presented.
