Established in 1961, AFEI has conducted a number of research projects as well as 44 international seminars and training courses, in which 927 persons from 37 countries participated. AFEI's training programs follow certain general principles. They are practically oriented, deal with topics that are currently of general concern to the countries in the region, approach the criminal justice system as an integrated whole (coordinating the police, prosecution, and corrections, subsystems), and focus and training courses reflect the connections of AFEI with the UN. Past seminars have focused on prevention of juvenile delinquency, penal policies, role of women in correctional work, and planning and research in crime prevention. Since 1971, the training courses have been divided into two categories: courses in the administration of criminal justice and courses in the treatment of offenders. Research projects have included surveys of open correctional institutions in the Far East and Asia, juvenile delinquency, and public participation in crime prevention. AFEI's training program emphasizes the importance of research and the fruitful use of research findings in the countries of the region. Notes are given.
