This self-study manual is designed to provide practical guidance for the correction officer applicant in preparing for the occupational test.
Abstract
The manual is intended to help the student (1) gain familiarity with the occupational examination; (2) improve general test-taking skill; (3) improve skill in analyzing and answering questions involving reasoning, judgment, comparison, and evaluation; and (4) improve speed and skill in reading and understanding what is read. Types of questions that will be on the actual exam are presented. Many of the practice questions are taken from previous exams. The student's focus is narrowed to those fields most likely to be covered in the exam. Following the presentation of sample official announcements for the employment of correction officers, techniques of study and test-taking are listed. The section on duties and job knowledge describes the duties of the correction officer and presents a glossary of drug terms; judgement and reasoning questions; a glossary of probation, parole, and correction; and laws, terms, and procedures in police work, along with discussions of judgment for law enforcement officers and judgment problems for correction officers. The section on practice and preparation covers readings in law enforcement, reading comprehension (State correction law and State penal law,) report writing, coding ability, following instructions from tables and charts, observation, and arithmetical computations.
