A home security survey, concepts of burglary prevention, protecting a home's interior, protection against entry, protecting the home's exterior, and personal security are discussed in this booklet for preventing residential burglary.
Abstract
The home security survey asks questions to be answered 'yes' or 'no' in the areas of safe practices, preparing for an extended absence from the home, doors and entry areas, and windows. An effective burglary prevention program is indicated to be based on the concepts of deter, deny, delay, detect, and deceive. Guidance for protecting the home's interior covers marking and recording property, Neighborhood Watch, preparing for vacation, advising neighbors when you are not at home, being careful not to give strangers information about family schedules, providing a security closet for valuables, and insuring against theft. Instruction on protection against entry deals with the securing of various types of windows and doors, as well as alarms. Discussion of protection of the home's exterior focuses on the appearance of occupancy, visible house numbers, exterior lighting, and landscaping. For personal security in the case of a burglary, it is advised that no strangers be admitted to the home without proper identification, that emergency telephone numbers be posted near the phone, and that police be called before entering the home when forced entry is evident. Graphic illustrations are provided.
