A paper on crime prevention and public housing in England advocates the moderate use of mechanical prevention, the application of some defensible space principles, and better housing management practices. Aspects of a comprehensive crime prevention program in public housing in the United States are outlined, with attention to the aspects of environmental design and citizen self-help, followed by a paper that considers research directions for crime prevention in public housing in Australia. This paper focuses on housing management and the coordination of various community agencies to deal with crime in public housing. The community planning approach for dealing with crime in public housing is discussed in another presentation, and vandalism in public housing developments is considered in one of the studies. Housing allocation and related issues, residential crime and urban environments, and the development of local crime prevention programs are covered in other papers. Findings are presented from a British study of the relationship between degrees of parental supervision and delinquency. Papers are also presented on evidence from an investigation of public housing developments where fear of crime is particularly high, proposals for research on situational crime prevention in public housing, and the implementation of crime prevention policies.
