In 1979, the NSW Police Department became the first Australian police force to own and operate a helicopter in a full-time police role. Three pilots were recruited to fly the helicopter. They will undergo normal training as would any other police recruit. Future observers in the helicopter will be selected from those with proven ability in police work. They will be further trained in all facets of police observer duties, which will include navigation, map reading, meteorology, advanced first aid, search and rescue techniques, a thorough knowledge of the aircraft and all its systems, and a complete understanding of air traffic procedures. The duties of the Air Wing are in the following areas: assistance in apprehending persons involved in armed robberies, general crime prevention, criminal surveillance, antiterrorist activities, search and rescue, emergency transportation, and photography. Based on the benefits of helicopter patrol in the United States, it can be expected that the NSW Air Wing will increase response time and the general cost-effectiveness of patrol.
