Research activities related to the development of job analysis and applicant tests for entry-level law enforcement positions in California are described.
Abstract
The project consisted of (1) a statewide job analysis of the entry-level law enforcement position, (2) the development of model job announcement/job application forms for entry-level patrol positions, (3) the development of entry-level reading and writing tests, and (4) the development of entry-level physical performance tests. The statewide job analysis project yielded a data base which is used as the major building block for all validation and training research. The development of the job announcement/job application form is intended to provide uniformity across local agencies to ensure conformity to Federal and State fair employment guidelines with regard to the information solicited in these documents. Further, the forms were designed to (1) make a favorable impression upon applicants and (2) to give a realistic presentation of the job functions. The reading and writing tests were designed from an analysis of the reading and writing demands of the job and with due consideration to the validity and fairness requirements of the Federal Uniform Guidelines. The physical performance testing manual developed instructs local law enforcement agencies in the proper administration of two alternate physical performance tests.
