This report presents the results of the Ashland, Oreg., victimization survey and crime prevention evaluation; the period covered is from 1977 to 1979.
Abstract
The program's goal was to significantly reduce the number of burglaries and larcenies in Ashland through citizen involvement and education involving the media, community service organizations, and individuals. The evaluation found that the overall goal has been partially achieved. For the purpose of the evaluation, the change in burglary and larceny rates over the 2-year period was defined as the percentage of households/persons experiencing one or more completed burglaries or larcenies. Households victimized by theft decreased from 12.7 percent to 9.5 percent. Also, citizens who were victims of the combined property crime category of burglary, larceny, and auto theft dropped from 19.7 percent in 1977 to 11.5 percent in 1979. More people engraved their property with identification numbers and displayed antiburglary stickers than before the program began. The observed reduction in the property crime over the 2-year period was reflected in a significant reduction in the percentage of people who felt they would be a victim of crime during the next year (1980). Also compared are 1977 and 1979 Uniform Crime Report statistics, 1977 and 1979 perceptions of crime and crime-related issues, and 1977 and 1979 monetary losses due to residential and violent crime. Tables, footnotes, and 18 references are supplied. Survey instruments and data are appended. (Author summary modified)
