This manual presents and illustrates detailed guidelines for residential security, protection against street crime, armed and unarmed self-defense, and security in situations such as camping and hotels.
Abstract
Interviews with nationally known experts in all fields of crime prevention formed the basis of these guidelines. Advice on protecting the home covers the best door locks to purchase, ways of securing windows, effective alarm systems, safes for protecting valuables, and steps to take to protect the home when on vacation. Information on avoiding becoming the victim of crime in the home, on the street, in a car, or on a bus is also provided. Measures to take when on a vacation or business trip are included as well. Guidelines for protecting a child and for buying a dog for protection are outlined. Methods of surviving a criminal assault by fighting back are depicted, including the martial arts, the use of knives and guns, and of nonlethal weapons such as Tasers and tear gas, and the special self-defense techniques needed by women. Additional guidelines cover the establishment of Neighborhood Watch programs, emergency telephone numbers, automobile security, and the legal aspects of self-defense. Addresses of manufacturers and suppliers of items mentioned in the book and a multiple-choice test of crime prevention knowledge are included.
