AJIS is a multijurisdictional, computerized information system that provides operational and administrative support to many of the State's criminal justice agencies. It is a method of collecting, storing, and disseminating criminal justice information. Currently, the basic operational applications are those for the Alaska Department of Public Safety and the Alaska court system. However, all AJIS users have access to the information. The AJIS computer is located in Anchorage; terminals are located at various agencies throughout the State. The system allows intra-agency communication among agencies who deal with those who are accused or convicted of crimes. It is anticipated that AJIS will be expanded to include additional components which will facilitate the work of the police, prosecutor's office, public defender's office, the courts, corrections, and the criminal justice planning agency. For example, application of the system to court calendaring will provide the scheduling of court proceedings as related to the type of case and availability of court resources. With regard to correctional system application, establishing a visitor control file would serve to clarify inmate visitation status and provide a current list of approved visitors.
