The 1981 activities of the National Automobile Theft Bureau (NATB) are reported, with attention to the incidence of thefts of automobiles, off-road equipment, and boats; law enforcement activities directed against salvage and 'chop-shop' operations; and personnel training.
Abstract
To help combat vehicle theft and fraud, NATB maintains in excess of 2.25 million online records with information on automobiles and other vehicles. The growth in NATB's files reflects a 15.38-percent increase over total net records added during 1980. NATB personnel participated in 971 vehicle theft, fraud, and arson training programs during 1981, and the Bureau cosponsored a prosecutors' training session dealing with vehicle theft. NATB also cooperated with the Chicago Police Department (Illinois), in developing and producing a series of 5-10 minute video training tapes on vehicle theft. NATB'S data base on vehicle fraud has increased, and the Bureau's attempts to reduce the flow of stolen vehicles across the border to Mexico. Information on the theft of heavy equipment and boats is also presented. Photographs and tables are supplied.
