Trends in criminality, robbery of financial institutions, treatment of offenders, and juvenile delinquency in Japan are discussed, with emphasis on criminal justice statistics.
Abstract
The section on trends in criminality presents crime trends and a statistical review of crime in Japan in 1980, as well as trends affecting various crimes, data on special crimes and offenders, and research on sentencing through the use of computerized criminal records. Trends in robbery of Japanese financial institutions (banks, post offices, credit unions, agricultural cooperative associations, etc.) are compared to such trends in selected foreign countries (the United States, France, and the German Federal Republic), and the circumstances of the offenses and the characteristics of the offenders are discussed, followed by descriptions of effective countermeasures against such offenses. The section on treatment of offenders describes and provides data on prosecution and trial, correctional institutions, and probation, parole, and aftercare. The section on juvenile delinquency considers delinquency statistics for 1980, the background and notable aspects of juvenile criminality, specific offenses, disposition and treatment, delinquency in selected Western countries (the United States, the United Kingdom, the German Federal Republic, and France), and selected problems in juvenile delinquency. Tabular data are included for each section. For each major section of the document, see NCJ 83513-16.
