The Associate Attorney General testifies on the Department of Justice role in the Federal drug law enforcement program.
Abstract
The department is cooperating with the State Department on efforts at controlling drugs at the source and on the international drug enforcement situation. As a result, the United States has been successful in reaching agreements with several nations to permit vessels registered under foreign flags to be boarded and searched when that vessel is suspected of transporting drugs to the United States. In addition, the department has been working with the Department of Defense to effect more extensive drug law enforcement support by the U.S. Navy and the Coast Guard. At the present time, military forces are supporting the department's South Florida Task Force. In January 1982, the Attorney General announced the department's initiatives to coordinate the drug enforcement efforts of the FBI and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). FBI resources will supplement those of DEA under the reorganization plan. Recent successful DEA efforts have centered on the seizing of drug traffickers' assets. No references are cited.
