Three research reviews of particular relevance to the Canadian prairie Provinces deal with the mentally disordered offender in the Prairie Region, policing in the Prairies, and natives and the criminal justice system.
Abstract
Selected problems relating to the mentally disordered offender are reviewed, including theoretical definitions, empirically justified classifications, reliable diagnoses, the incidence of disorder, public opinion, and treatment modalities. Research on the retardate, psychopath, and sexual offender is considered, particularly that bearing on treatment modalities for each category. Recent research on policing in the prairie Provinces is reviewed under the topics of police administration, police roles, police training, and police-community relations. Neglected areas of research are also identified. Following consideration of the basic factors in the social setting of Native Canadians (Indians and Metis), the available literature on the relationships between the Natives and the criminal justice system in the prairie Provinces is reviewed. Problems surrounding valid and relevant research on this subject are outlined, and priorities for future research are suggested. Appropriate tabular data and extensive bibliographies accompany each presentation.
