This public information booklet describes Ontario's (Canada) justice system, including the police and public safety, the courts, correctional services for adults, the juvenile in the justice system, justice in the marketplace, and protecting individual rights.
Abstract
The booklet presents the four ministries with major responsibility for justice policy: Solicitor General, Attorney General, Correctional Services, and Consumer and Commercial Relations. The Cabinet Committee on Justice, which is composed of the ministers of the four ministries, coordinates the work of the various ministries. The discussion of the police and public safety considers police responsibilities and powers, the Ontario Police Commission, police boards, other law enforcement officers, and other public safety officials and services. Consideration of the courts and other formal agencies for deciding disputes focuses on the court process, key court personnel and services, civil and criminal court procedure, court structure, and tribunals, boards, and commissions. Areas covered in the section on correctional services for adults include types of institutions, bail verification and supervision, reentry into the community, the role of the volunteer, special services for native people, and the investigation of complaints. In addition to a description of the juvenile justice system, new legislative proposals bearing upon the juvenile justice system are presented. Following a description of consumer protection practices is an explanation of legislation bearing upon the protection of individual rights. Other public information booklets on aspects of Ontario's criminal justice system are listed.
