A needs assessment study of existing juvenile detention facilities in Santa Barbara County, Calif., is presented with attention to current problems and anticipated future requirements.
Abstract
Each county facility was inventoried and space utilization of each area identified. Questionnaires were distributed to staff members of each facility, and population projections were completed. Characteristics of the 66 juveniles being detained in the facilities on April 23, 1981, were evaluated. The task force articulated several options presenting different approaches to the county's needs. These options include elimination of the camp program, continuation of transporting juveniles between halls, installation of plumbing fixtures in the sleeping rooms at the Santa Barbara Juvenile Hall, remodeling Juvenile Hall, construction of support facilities at Los Prietos Boys' Camp, construction of the camp at a new site, and construction of a new 40-unit sleeping room at the juvenile hall in Santa Maria. Construction costs are included, where applicable. Tabular and graphic data, floor and site plans, and the study questionnaire are included. Relevant county codes and other information are appended.
