This looseleaf notebook describes community crime prevention organizations, programs, and activities located in the Portland, Oreg., area.
Abstract
A major organization in the community crime prevention effort is Neighborhoods Against Crime (NAC), a LEAA-funded program which is located in the city's Office of Neighborhood Associations and which provides neighborhoods with assistance in neighborhood watch, personal safety, crisis, and police-community cooperative programs. NAC operates neighborhood crime prevention offices throughout the city. A resource library and information service is provided to Portland citizens and community organizations by the Community Safety Information Project of the Center for Urban Education. The Portland Police Bureau's crime prevention unit and the sheriff's offices of three area counties provide information and technical assistance in such areas as commercial crime prevention and rape prevention. Six Portland organizations offer training in self-defense. Three other organizations offer statewide education in crime prevention. Projects have been conducted to increase both physical safety and the safety of personal property, to increase community safety by increasing community pride and cohesiveness, and by dealing with specific neighborhood problems. Methods of promoting crime prevention have included presentations, poster contests, and the production of t-shirts with crime prevention slogans. Crime prevention activities for specific audiences have included puppet shows for children, reflector tape programs for businesses, and a victim assistance project for street people. Three community safety publications published by the Center for Urban Education are listed.
