During fiscal year 1981, the total of 44,620 referrals represented a decrease of 2,225 compared to the previous year's total of 46,845 referrals. A total of 34,836 referrals of approximately 78 percent were received from police officers. Of the 44,620 processed by the Juvenile Services Administration, 38 percent were referred for formal court action, 15.6 percent were handled informally, 4.5 percent were disapproved, and 41.6 percent were closed at intake. Of the 10 regions in Maryland, Baltimore City received the most referrals, followed by Prince George's County, and Baltimore County. A total of 35,464 referrals involved males, while 9,156 involved females. Sixteen-year-olds were the most frequently referred of any age group. The major reason for referral was assault, followed by property offenses. Of the 17,108 cases referred for formal court action, about one-third received probation, probation without verdict, or protective supervision. Graphs, tables, and a map are supplied.
