Abstract
Opening with a discussion of how self-service sales methods have increased opportunities for stealing merchandise, the film traces the evolution of shoplifting from a sporadic pastime to an addictive habit. Shoplifting results in higher prices and unemployment due to business losses and failures; it ultimately affects wages, the job market, and the cost of living. The film illustrates various security measures implemented to deter shoplifters. Scenes from a Shoplifters Anonymous workshop expose the high risks and low rewards of shoplifting. The film also shows how improper shopping habits can lead to wrongful accusations. It emphasizes citizens' responsibility to report shoplifters and to help others understand how this crime hurts everyone. The film is part of a materials packet, including a leader's guide; participant materials; a book, 'The Shoplifters Are Coming,' by L. A Conner; and 10 issues of the newsletter 'Keep Watching.' The program is recommended for use by retailers, law enforcement agencies, schools, and local service organizations as a community outreach and retail employee training tool.
