Abstract
A paper uses the notion of sociological paradigms to argue that the demise of labeling theory is illusionary. Using jail records as the basis for investigation, one study looks at various patterns of incarceration in the Eastern Judicial District of Manitoba from 1918-39. One paper argues that Canada is more philosophically inclined than the United States toward a Burkean model of crime control, while another criticizes the MacGuigan Report on Canadian Penitentiaries. The use of a complex popular campaign around the theme of law and order in the British general election of May 1979 is hypothesized to be one of the major reasons for the Conservative Party's increased popular electoral base. Aspects of the Canadian election of the same month and year are explored to ascertain the significantly different role of populism in the Canadian situation. Notes and references are supplied.
