Following passage of the 1977 Casino Control Act in New Jersey, legalized gambling in Atlantic City has caused crime statistics to soar and law enforcement personnel to increase dramatically.
Abstract
Law enforcement personnel include the Atlantic City Police Department, the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Secret Service, the Justice Department's Organized Crime Strike Force, and the Division of Gambling Enforcement (DGE), (a branch of the State attorney general's office). Besides protecting local citizens, enforcing laws against prostitution, and investigating the inevitable robberies, law enforcement personnel are concerned with finding the links between organized crime and labor unions that service the casinos and hotels. Another sensitive area for law enforcement is official corruption. In addition, with so many different law enforcement agencies working in Atlantic City, overlapping of investigations occurs, but most law enforcement sources emphasize cooperation with other agencies. The article concludes with advice to police agencies in other jurisdictions considering initiatives to allow gambling.
