Among the criticisms leveled at the police are allegations of corruption, favoritism, brutality, discourtesy, neglect of duty, discrimination against the poor and underprivileged, and fabrication of evidence. The association of the police with the ruling political power is a serious obstacle to the people's trust in their services. Special organizations exist in India for looking into allegations of police misconduct, but their ability to redress the people's grievances is also criticized. Police should try to improve their attitudes and treatment of the citizenry as well as their overall performance in combatting crime and enforcing the laws equitably.
