Data for the project were derived from questionnaire responses of 325 Taiwanese police representing three police precincts. Cynicism was measured through a revised form of Niederhoffer's (1967) 20-item index by subjecting it to a principle-component factor analysis. The major findings of the project include, (1) low ranking police are more cynical than higher ranking ones, (2) rural police are less cynical than urban police, and (3) career stage is only slightly related to cynicism. However, none of the observed relationships is particularly strong. Hence, future research must go beyond the present investigation and test both first and second-order relationships for theoretically salient variables. (Author abstract)
