This article discusses strategies for enabling probation officers to become more effective in treating homosexual clients, in conjunction with supporting literature.
Abstract
Probation departments must learn more about available community resources for homosexuals. Educating probation officers means not only enhancing their expertise as information brokers but also developing a heightened awareness and sensitivity to the special needs of gay offenders. To accomplish this, courts and probation departments must overcome any reluctance to hire homosexuals and trust that their own careful judgments in screening applicants will be sound. Once gays are hired, they must be used fully in effective and structured ways. Footnotes are supplied. (Author summary modified)
