The Prison Reform Trust (PRT) was established in Great Britain during 1981 to promote debate about prison conditions by encouraging interest in prisons and by advocating constructive reforms in prison rules and policy.
Abstract
The PRT has been spurred to take action because of numerous corrections problems, such as the length of prison sentences, the expanding population of incarcerated juveniles, unsanitary prison conditions, excessive secrecy and censorship in prisons, and other factors. Because prisons serve a minimal rehabilitative purpose, funding for them should be shifted to other efforts. One of PRT's first efforts will be to overcome public prejudice against prison reform. PRT's goals and methods are detailed.
