The Maryland Arson Control Program took over 3 years and nearly $600,000 to plan, implement, and complete. Yet in many areas, it took only the first steps for improved arson prevention, detection, and control. The need for continued efforts to develop thorough and timely automated data on arsons is but one example of the tasks remaining. The project improved arson control by providing staff State and local agencies to coordinate antiarson activities and assist in investigations and adjudication of arson suspects. It also provided training to thousands of firefighters and contributed to the purchase of sophisticated arson detection and investigation equipment. Participants agreed that the program's greatest impact was improved cooperation and coordination among law enforcement, fire, and other agencies involved in the detection, investigation, and prosecution of arson cases. Representatives from these various groups met regularly to discuss problems and share ideas about a more cohesive approach to arson control both within and among local subdivisions and between State and local agencies. Progress is reported for Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Montgomery, and Prince George's counties as well as the cities of Annapolis, Baltimore, and Hagerstown.
