This handbook for abusive men provides tested techniques for ending violent behavior by controlling and channeling anger and the situations and conditions that may spawn it, such as drug and alcohol use and alienation.
Abstract
The format of the handbook is that of a course that lasts 14 weeks. The first week focuses on domestic violence, violence in general, and how to stop it. Weeks two and three provide guidance in recognizing the physical and psychological symptoms of various degrees of anger so as to know when to take a 'time-out.' A 'time-out' involves breaking from the situation where the anger is being fueled and engaging in physical exercise and contemplation for 1 hour, a technique which reduces the level of anger and thus prevents violent behavior. Weeks four and five consider controlling anger by developing a heightened sensitivity to the symptoms of anger by writing in an 'anger journal' those situations and feelings associated with one's anger. Practice 'time-outs' are encouraged, and other exercises are prescribed as well. Week six explores how to listen to self and others so that rational control over a situation and relationship is developed to replace impulsive and out-of-control expressions of anger. Recognizing that violence often stems from unrelieved stress, week seven analyzes the nature and effects of stress and suggests exercises for reducing stress and its effects. Weeks eight and nine discuss feelings and communication, with the intent that feelings, particularly of anger and frustration, be relieved and expressed through verbal communication rather than through violence. The remaining weeks deal with asking for what one wants, how to say 'no,' alcohol and drug abuse, how to find effective counseling, and the role of the criminal justice system in dealing with abusive behavior. Appended are an example of an 'anger journal,' a student evaluation form, and 13 suggested readings.
