A museum security director's job involves tailoring a security plan to the unique functions of a particular museum, conforming to the legal parameters for security functions, using modern security technology, following museum theft patterns, facilitating conservation of the collection, and planning museum expansion.
Abstract
The duties of museum security directors have multiplied because many museums have become community centers involved in wide-ranging activities that serve a large and diversified public, which requires the development of a highly individualized security system for each museum. Any museum security system must be effective without compromising the inviting and aesthetic atmosphere of the museum. Such a security plan depends upon the appropriate use of modern security technology, requiring that a museum security director be knowledgeable in this area. The security director must also be aware of the laws that apply to the hiring and firing of personnel as well as those that relate to citizens' rights, since security actions must accord with these rights. Security designs must be revised according to patterns of museum theft and the changing market value of various objects housed in a museum. Further, security practices must be tailored to the demands for conserving the collection through such practices as climate control and proper lighting. Museum expansions place heavy demands on the security director, as he/she must be involved in planning the design of the new facility as well as ensuring that practices are followed in construction that ensure the safety of the existing collection. Four notes are listed.
