These policies and procedures for museum security cover the major duties and responsibilities of security guards and security supervisors, as well as procedures for the handling of particular situations such as the handling of suspicious packages, a bomb search, and handling art objects.
Abstract
Policies and procedures for major duties and responsibilities cover required conduct (reporting for duty, courtesy, submitting reports, personal appearance, etc.) and prohibited conduct (neglect of duty, insubordination, the use of unnecessary force, use of alcohol and drugs, etc.). Types of orders are also specified, along with the handling of property and equipment. Policy is also presented for guards' talking with the public, guard functions on post, leaving a post, grooming and appearance, and what to do when informed of a fire or evacuation. Guidance is provided for recognizing a suspicious package or object, along with procedures for handling items so identified. The handling of intelligence information is considered, as well as associated responsibilities such as the discovery of a bomb and bomb-search techniques. Other procedures focus on handling the theft of art objects, handling art objects, calling the police or fire department, packages and parcels leaving the museum, and handling various types of persons such as juveniles, persons mentally disturbed, demonstrators, and intoxicated and disorderly persons. Procedures are also provided for the use of handcuffs and restraining devices. The appendix discusses post orders.
