This report identifies promising strategies for preventing serious juvenile crime by assessing 12 community-based projects that attempt to reduce violent youth crime.
Abstract
These projects need improved management and information systems to support more efficient and responsive service delivery. Before taking action, they should ground themselves in current prevention theory and methodology and then conduct systematic assessments of the aggregate nature of youth crime, community needs, and resources. They should consider establishment and maintenance of community and street credibility as a key objective, and subject all project strategies to a systematic review process. Community and youth input should be obtained, and appropriate staff training techniques should be developed. Endnotes and over 100 references are supplied. Detailed descriptions of the 12 projects are appended. A few data tables are included.
