This guide presents objectives and supporting strategies in the areas of public awareness, program development, and program assistance to help law enforcement plan their crime prevention programs.
Abstract
The materials represent a comprehensive program which involves all aspects of the agency, community groups, service organizations, government, businesses, and institutions such as schools and churches. Nine strategies designed to increase public awareness include using posters from the National Crime Prevention Council and seeking opportunities to deliver presentations on crime prevention to schools, businesses, churches, or other institutions through which large numbers of people can be reached. Among the 10 strategies for program development are the establishment of a local crime prevention council and development of Neighborhood Watch programs in high-risk neighborhoods. The 10 strategies for program assistance, support and information to both public and private organizations include preparing a crime prevention resource directory and training patrol officers and investigators in the security investigation of homes and businesses. A resource list provides the addresses of 13 sources of printed materials in the area of crime prevention and lists the materials available.
