Cost data tables illustrate the variations in prison costs between States in Australia, separating recurrent expenditures from capital expenditures. The study is based largely on costs during 1977-78 and 1978-79.
Abstract
Recurrent expenditures per prisoner during 1978-79 did not vary greatly among the States. Western Australia had the highest per prisoner recurrent expenditure. Such costs were higher in 1977-78, with Queensland again having the lowest per prisoner expenditure. The average capital expenditure per prisoner varied considerably among States, with Tasmania having the highest and Western Australia the lowest capital expenditures. The report also covers corrections salaries and revenue. Numerous statistical tables and 27 reference notes are supplied.
