Rural crime prevention efforts should use an educational approach which strengthens the ability of schools and the family to foster youths' effective functioning in their social environment.
Abstract
Amateurs and young people commit most rural property crimes and account for the large increase in these crimes in recent years. Rural communities must increasingly recognize that they cannot delegate to police the responsibility for preventing a large proportion of rural crimes. Family, schools, churches, and youth organizations must accept the primary responsibility for preventing involvement by young people, providing alternatives for peer interaction, and developing a strong character of responsibility in youth. Recent changes in rural areas have increased young people's opportunities to interact with peers and have reduced time spent with their families. Schools can aid in crime prevention by helping young people understand the consequences of committing a criminal act, examining their attitudes relative to various deviant acts, and providing skilled training in peer group behavior. Families must realize that they need to provide intentional opportunities for young people to develop needed attitudes and skills. For example, they need to find ways to increase the amount of time shared with their children and to engage in regular and systematic activities such as family discussions and outings. Crime prevention professionals must recognize the potential contributions of the family and the school. A note and 25 references are provided.
