This study compared 10 violent and 10 nonviolent youthful offenders serving Borstal Training in England to determine whether they differed on a wide range of family variables, general and criminal background variables, and individual characteristics.
Abstract
Violent offenders were similar to nonviolent youths on most of the variables investigated, with the following exceptions: the violent subjects evidenced greater experience of parent violence, history of crimes against persons, significantly higher scores on tests of nonverbal intelligence and literacy, and more external scores on the personality dimension of locus of control. Implications of this study for theories of violent delinquency and management of violent offenders are discussed. Footnotes, 30 references, and study data are included. (Author abstract modified)
