This monograph presents conference papers on research issues and educational and treatment programs for the learning disabled (LD) adolescent, with particular emphasis on the link between juvenile delinquency (JD) and learning disabilities and treatment for delinquent LD youth.
Abstract
Papers examine methodological problems confronting researchers studying the relationship between LD and JD and the need to identify and provide special services for the LD population. The Administrator of the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) discusses Federal initiatives designed to meet the educational and vocational needs of this population. Another author documents the unfair treatment of LD children by the juvenile justice system. A right to treatment for these youth must be established. Diagnostic and planning procedures of the Supplemental Education Project are described; these are designed to bring the Long Lane School for delinquents in Connecticut into compliance with both Federal and State guidelines for the education of exceptional children. Also described is Operation Divert, a treatment program for LD first offenders in Florida. One article describes an educational program that teaches the LD student about the economic system through a token economy that rewards students for good work and behavior. Also described are techniques to involve families in therapy for LD youth; a juvenile court program in St. Louis to identify, divert, and treat the LD youth; and other educational and research programs.
