The Police Information Network (PIN) provides information in the areas of incident identification (what, where, and when), names of persons involved, vehicles involved, property involved, and narrative.
Abstract
The PIN facilitates the association of like incidents through comprehensive indexing (27 indexes), and accuracy and report followup is prompted by the immediate availability of incidents for review not only by the officer or investigator assigned but by their supervisors and all police personnel with an interest in the incident. Further, the system aids in identifying and returning stolen property to the owner in conjunction with the Pawned Property Subsystem should the article be pawned. The PIN maintains incident reports on-line for 2 years, indexes to incident reports on-line for 10 years, microfilmed reports after 2 years, and scannable tape indexes after 10 years. Statistics for Uniform Crime Reports and managerial reporting are provided as well. The system also addresses restricted release of information from law enforcement agencies to the public and press. The network is designed to support multi-jurisdictional participation, with up to 999 various agencies being able to participate in one PIN system. The connection of regional PIN systems to one another is also possible. Each of the subsystems is described in detail, including the nature of the primary indexes in each subsystem.
