The 1981 annual report on corrections in Denmark addresses major issues, such as prison overcrowding and a legislative change allowing offenders to be committed to hospitals, their own home, or other special institutions if their health, age, or other special circumstances justify it. Statistics are presented on costs, inmates, and correction staff.
Abstract
Data on expenditures for Denmark's and Greenland's prison and probation system are given, as are statistics on staffing by job type, institution, employee age, type of staff per 100 inmates, and education. Statistics on inmates and parolees, as well as youths residing in group homes, cover demographic characteristics and offenses. Further statistics cover inmate programs and prison industries, disciplinary measures taken during the year, attempted and successful escapes from prison facilities, releases, leave granted, and parole. A special section informs on drug-addicted inmates. Organization of the country's correctional system is discussed. Three brief articles discusses the experimentation with community service orders in Denmark, the correctional system's responsibility in relation to ex-offender employment, and the clergymen's role in corrections. Statistics are presented in tabular form.
