This volume describes the crime prevention activities on the campuses of five universities: Harvard University, Yale University, University of Delaware, University of California at Los Angeles, and University of Washington.
Abstract
Crime prevention activities have occurred in the areas of architectural design, alarms, lighting, rape awareness programs, the use of emergency telephones, and whistle programs. Specific areas of attention have been office, museum, and library security, as well as security for athletic facilities and for specific groups like summer school students, those attending graduation, and graduate students. Ineffective programs have included the effort to get people to walk together to avoid street crime, an effort to establish a Neighborhood Watch program in residence halls, and the use of a bicycle patrol. At each campus, new programs have been initiated in recent years. Descriptions of each university's program and security staff, lists of the programs which were the most difficult to implement, current trends in campus law enforcement, and recommendations for use at other campuses are provided. Sample posters are also supplied.
