The text reviews research with significance for police investigation procedures, highlights the much discussed findings of the RAND Corporation's study of police effectiveness in solving crimes, and assesses its impact on both subsequent research and policing practices in the United States. In general, Canadian research remains far behind the U.S. accomplishments in this area. A total of 57 works are cited in the literature review. The appended bibliography lists monographs and periodicals separately under the rubrics of general criminal investigation and studies of investigative procedures and their repercussions. Topical subdivisions of the first category include general approaches, evidence and procedure, history, administration and organization, and rural policing. The second category comprises the following topics: arson; burglary, simple theft and fraud; official corruption; homicides and violent crimes; drugs; organized crime; aggravated theft; sex crimes; and quantitative studies. The total bibliography contains about 270 entries.
