The opening chapters encourage citizens to find ways to fight back against the street 'punks' who would intimidate and frighten citizens in public places and in their own homes. Fighting back is described as cooperation within safety guidelines and legal parameters in making it clear to would-be muggers, rapists, burglars, etc., that citizens will not stand by while fellow citizens are under attack. Group actions may include traveling in groups or with 'buddies,' congregating to help drive off thugs intimidating another citizen, and developing a joint alarm system for groups of apartments, where alarms go off in all apartments when forced entry is made into any one apartment. Instructions for protective and helping action are suggested for particular contexts, such as subways, buses, bus shelters, bus and train terminals, parking lots, parks, theaters, shopping malls, and bars. Guidance is also provided for protecting your apartment or house and for how to deal with common particular threatening situations on the 'street.' A subject index is provided.
