The Department of Corrections is responsible for these persons, who receive a term of civil commitment similar to that imposed for the felony offense for which they were convicted. The courts committed 512 persons during 1980, the smallest number since the program began. The rate of commitment has been steadily decreasing since 1971. About three-fourths of the clients are men. The median age for male addicts was 29.5 years, while the median age for females was 28.2. Almost 1,700 clients were released during 1980, usually to outpatient supervision. Some returned to court for sentencing on their original criminal charges.
