This report presents the results of a nine-State pilot study that investigates expansion of current offender-based criminal justice statistics to include probation. All participation is voluntary.
Abstract
The report contains summary profiles of demographic and criminal history composition for 1981 probation entry and release populations within the nine selected jurisdictions. It analyzes probation population statistics within the context of other correctional populations (e.g., parole and prison). Reported variables include age, race, sex and education, sentence length, commitment offense, type of admission, prior record, and time served. Also included is a discussion of the feasibility of expanding this pilot study to a comprehensive national reporting program. The probation Characteristics series is designed to serve as an offender-based companion, within the National Probation Reports, to Probation in the United States, a series based on an aggregate probation data collection effort begun in 1979. The present report represents findings from a pilot study of limited scope, but one that demonstrates the potential for an ongoing national program.
