The North Carolina Division of Youth Services has had numerous achievements in operating five training schools for delinquent youth in the State. Onsite assessments of camping programs for youth also indicate considerable success.
Abstract
The division has attempted to develop a uniform statewide treatment philosophy and program, the Mainstream Program Model. This model includes the development of treatment plans and individual education plans for each youth. Other division achievements are the development of a personnel policy manual, special programs to meet individual needs, commitment to staff development, a reduction in overall commitments by over 50 percent, and a commitment to the treatment team concept. The Juvenile Evaluation Center, Stonewall Jackson School, Samarkand Manor School, Dobbs School, and C.A. Dillon School were included in the assessment, as were camping programs operated by the Eckerd Wilderness Educational System. Suggestions to improve these programs are included.
