There were 1,244 juveniles committed to the Virginia State Board of Corrections in 1982 and 1,252 admitted into direct care. Most were male, and 43.5 percent were black.
Abstract
Of the 1,252 children, 771 or 61.6 percent were committed for offenses against property and 207 or 16.5 percent were committed for offenses against persons. The report presents statistics on the committed children's race and sex, age at commitment, age at first contact and type of contact, number of commitments, intelligence, and living situation at time of commitment. Also given are the number of commitments by month and by court, a medical evaluation, physical characteristics, previous residential placement or psychiatric hospitalizations, and an educational evaluation. Numerous tables are supplied.
