The Ministry of the Solicitor General was created by Parliament in 1966, bringing the major operational elements of the Federal Government concerned with the administration of the criminal justice system under the direction of the Solicitor General. In this report, each of the four major components of the Ministry reviews its legislative and policy initiatives and operational activities for fiscal year 1981-82, as well as providing an outline of priorities and anticipated activities for 1982-83. The operations and organization of each branch of the Secretariat are presented, including the branches of Policy, Police and Security, Programs, Human Resources, and Finance and Administration. The structure and activities of the Corporate Planning Office and the Office of the Deputy Solicitor General are also considered. Topics considered in reviewing the work of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are organization, jurisdiction, administration, criminal operations, and Canadian police services. Highlights of 1981-82 are presented for the National Parole Board, and a statistical review of parole board decisions is provided. The review of the Correctional Service covers organization; objectives; planning, management, and administration; custody of inmates; offender case management; education, training, and employment of inmates; health care; and technical services. Statistical tables provide comparative information on the operations of the Correctional Service for fiscal years 1980-81 and 1981-82.
