A 1980 survey of 525 California law enforcement agencies indicated that 130,346 minors had been detained in 292 local jails and lockups. The number of detentions since 1976 has been fairly constant, at somewhat over 100,000 each year.
Abstract
Of the minors detained, 82.9 percent were male, and most were in police facilities. Their average length of stay was 12.2 days; the median was 2.6 days. The number of minors detained in jails in excess of 24 hours appears to be decreasing; 1 in every 5 minors detained over 24 hours was 15 years old or younger. Of the State's 58 counties, 6 did not detain any minors in jail. Tables and brief commentaries compose most of the report. (Author abstract modified)
