This annual report of the Central Council of Probation and After-care Committees, which coordinates the work of 56 committees in England and Wales, reports on the future direction of the probation service, legislation bearing upon probation and aftercare, inner city work, liaison with the police, and the work of council subcommittees.
Abstract
The report first lists the names and affiliations of council members and then presents an introduction by the council chairman. The future direction of the probation service is advised to be an expansion of probation services in an effort to increase the viability of noncustodial alternatives to imprisonment. Aspects of the Criminal Justice Act of 1982 are discussed, followed by a report on efforts to improve probation service response to inner city needs.
