Victimology involves complex issues of justice, morality, and political power. It can be viewed from many different perspectives and can be considered a formal field of scientific inquiry similar to or a component of criminology or an informal examination of fundamental themes.
Abstract
The label 'victim' is subjective, reflecting a complex process of victimization. This process begins with perception of the victim, legitimization of victim status, and commitment to assistance. In examining victims, it is possible to study the relationship between the victim and other persons or groups, the way the relationship is interpreted, and the variety of social obligations involved in that relationship. The study of victims can help researchers understand the process of inquiry itself. A humanistic perspective in victimology is based on respect for each human being. It is a value orientation that can help people become sensitive to the importance of life and to become willing to be committed to help those unjustly harmed. Victimology faces a period of reconceptualization and synthesis, reflecting the Nation's conservative mood. Although the research agenda will expand, the lack of a comprehensive theoretical framework will still hinder conceptual developments. Twelve references are included.
